What is Black Pens?
Black Pens is a writing retreat for Black womxn. A combination of enjoyment, learning, community, fellowship and focused sessions where we lightly place our feet on the necks of our fellow attendees, and encourage each other to move a little closer to our writing goals. It is for established, aspiring and curious writers.
Black Pens focuses on bringing us together in a safe and relaxing space to encourage creativity, camaraderie and progress.
Learn from expert speakers, benefit from peer feedback, or simply chill out in the beautiful surroundings. You will not regret your Black Pens experience.
When is it?
The inaugural Black Pens Retreat is planned for Monday July 18th – Thursday July 21st, 2022
Food, snacks, accommodation and activities will all be covered in the price of the ticket – all you need to handle is transportation and the retreat drip (read: loungewear) you’ll be showcasing at the venue.
Unfortunately, Black Pens 2022 has SOLD OUT (in record time) but keep your eyes open as places may still open up.

Black Pens was founded by Onyi Nwabineli who, adrift in the ocean of writer’s block, tweeted that it would be fun to have a writer’s retreat for Black women where they could come together, be served assorted meats and fruit platters, sleep on firm mattresses and, take in some fresh air.
Apparently, others agreed.
Onyi’s debut novel, Someday, Maybe is due for release in autumn 2022.
